ARTICLE TITLE: Conflict Resolution in North Caucasus: the Role of Informal Law

ABSTRACT: The paper deals with a little-studied aspects of the major conflicts in the former Soviet Northern Caucasus settlement (in the Prigorodny district of North Ossetia and Novolak district of Dagestan). The field survey has demonstrated that legal pluralism is a wide spread phenomenon in these conflict areas. The author's field research also shows that at the current stage of the conflict settlement process local informal legal norms (non-institutionalized, but historically inherent in the region) in some cases plays the positive role. The main conclusion: the informal legal mechanisms play the most important role in regulating the process of deported persons return to the conflict areas and their property restitution.
